Victim's relief after £5m payout

18 October 2005

A 21-year old named Ben Royce received a £5 million payout after suffering extensive injuries in 2002 when he was involved in a very serious car crash. Royce was left paralysed after the accident with only limited movement in his fingers and legs. He must rely on a motorised wheelchair to get around for the rest of his life.

The accident took place on the A21 near Tonbridge in August 2002. Royce was the front seat passenger in the BMW being driven by his half-brother. The car hit a puddle and spun out of control and it was ruled that the driver’s insurers must pay £5 million in damages. This is one of the largest payouts ever to be awarded in a single case in the UK.

Included in the £5 million payout Royce received £3 million for all future medical care and attention that will be needed as well as £2.2 million for loss of earnings and to compensate for pain and suffering caused as a result of being left paralysed and in a wheelchair.
