Action to be taken after a car accident
Whatever you are intending to do about your car accident claim, actions you could take include:
- Inform the police if the personal injury claim resulted from a road traffic accident. Please note that some insurance policies may be invalid if an accident is not reported within a short period in which case you will not receive the accident compensation you may otherwise be due
- If the car accident injury resulted from a RTA*, report it to your insurance company
- Report your injury to your doctor immediately, as it could become more serious. Alternatively attend Accident and Emergency soon after the car crash.
- You should do this even if the road traffic injury seems minor. If you subsequently go to court to pursue the car accident claim, the doctor will be asked to provide a medical report on injuries sustained.
- Gather evidence about the car accident and injuries
- Time and date of accident
- Contact details of drivers, passengers and pedestrians involved.
- Vehicle Insurance details for the driver of the other vehicle
- weather, visibility and lighting conditions, including street lighting
- Name, "collar number" and force details of any police officer
- Identify any injuries to all persons involved
- Photographic evidence if possible
